The Helden Distillery’s story began two decades ago when Pieter van Helden, the Lead Distiller, discovered his fascination with distillation at the age of 17. From humble beginnings producing fruit brandies known as “mampoer,” Pieter’s love for the art of whisky gradually took shape. In 2017, inspired by a passion for Africa and a drive for innovation, the concept of African Style Whisky was born, leading to the establishment of the Helden Distillery the following year.

Pieter, thrir Lead Distiller, and Maureen, the Communications Officer, bring their heritage and love for South Africa to the forefront. Supported by Sean Barradas, owner of The Dog & Fig brewery, his brewing team, and their dedicated employees like Reason Matewe and Dewald Hattingh, their team’s expertise shines through. With a collective wealth of knowledge encompassing multiple doctorates in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, we ensure the utmost craftsmanship in our creations.

Showcasing Africa’s Flavours and Heritage.

Curious about African Style Whisky? It’s an innovative approach pioneered by the Helden Distillery to showcase Africa’s offerings. Distinguished by its unique geographical and flavor profiles, African Style Whisky adheres to three non-negotiable rules: a minimum of 51% indigenous African grains in the grain bill, maturation or finishing on indigenous African woods, and distillation and maturation on African soil. By exploring African grains like sorghum and millet, we add new dimensions to the whisky experience, creating a truly distinctive offering.

Infusing African Woods and Flavours.

Their innovative production techniques enable us to introduce African wood flavors during the maturation process, imparting toasted wood nuances reminiscent of African “braai” fires. The Helden Distillery’s limited editions explore various wood types, including Mopane, Sweet Thorn, and other “acacia” species. However, our flagship wood is the magnificent Camel Thorn tree, known for its rich and warm flavors, as well as its deep red amber color. As the Camel Thorn tree is protected in South Africa, we import all the wood from Namibia. In line with our commitment to sustainability, we pledge to plant one Camel Thorn tree for every barrel of African Style whisky we produce, contributing to the conservation of this remarkable species.

Among their range of African Style whiskies, the African Bonfire Whisky stands as our current masterpiece. Crafted using smoked malt and malted sorghum, this whisky matures on a fusion of Camel Thorn and French Oak, resulting in a sensory experience reminiscent of African nights around a bushveld fire. The African Bonfire Whisky will soon be available, inviting whisky enthusiasts to embark on an extraordinary flavor expedition.

In our Premier Collection, you’ll find their prospective flagship whisky, The African Bonfire Whisky. Also featured in our Premier Collection is The Helden Single Malt whisky. Meticulously crafted using a selection of specialized malts, this whisky entices the palate with a robust medley of rich raisins, caramel, bittersweet chocolate, and luscious dried fruits and nuts. With a long and warm finish and a lingering malt character, this non-chill filtered whisky retains its optimum colour and flavour.

While their flagship whiskies continue to mature in their casks, they proudly present the Innovate Range. This range includes three single malts available as New Make Spirit or finished on Hickory or Cherrywood, each offering its own distinct and captivating flavour profile.

The Summertime Collection introduces the Quintessence Gin, masterfully distilled from a purified cut of our single malt spirit base in combination with twelve carefully selected botanicals. Balancing smooth juniper, earthy herbs and spices, light citrus, and floral overtones, this gin adds a mysterious fifth dimension derived from rare botanicals of unique provenance, making it an enticing choice for whisky connoisseurs seeking a gin with depth and character.
