A Flourishing Bakery Business

With limited resources and an unwavering determination, Rantekoa ventured into the baking industry. Borotho Bakery, named after the Sotho word for “bread,” started in a backroom with just 20 loaves produced daily. As demand surged, the business outgrew its humble beginnings and relocated to a 6-meter container, employing a staff of 25. Today, Borotho Bakery supplies 500 loaves per day, expanding its offerings to include scones, burger buns, and hot-dog rolls.

Borotho Bakery’s influence extends beyond its delectable offerings. The bakery plays a pivotal role in supporting the local economy by trading with small businesses like Spaza-Shops, which produce the beloved Amakotas (Township Burgers). This mutually beneficial collaboration highlights the interconnections and collective prosperity fostered within Soweto. Borotho Bakery’s dedication to quality and affordability positions it as a key contributor to the township’s vibrant entrepreneurial landscape.

Overcoming Challenges and Expanding Horizons.

Despite the hurdles faced, such as load-shedding and limited electricity infrastructure, Refiloe Rantekoa remains resolute in his pursuit of growth. With an unwavering focus on delivering a superior product and the immense potential within Soweto’s 2-million-strong population, Rantekoa envisions Borotho Bakery producing 10,000 loaves daily shortly. As the business matures, plans to expand beyond Soweto to other townships like Alexandra and the East Rand are on the horizon.
