Porkbush Gin
Porkbush Gin was established in 2019 with the sole purpose of creating awareness around South Africa’s own wonder plant, the Spekboom and to make SPEKtacular gin in the process. Porkbush Gin supports Wonder Plant, a social enterprise, working towards fighting climate change and empowering disadvantaged individuals. See info tag for more information on Wonder Plant and the Great Labyrinth of Africa project.
Spekboom, also known as Pork Bush or Elephant’s food, is South Africa’s own indigenous wonder plant. Besides being edible (and high in Vitamin C), the medium-sized shrub found predominantly in the Eastern Cape, is resilient and an important ‘weapon’ in the fight against climate change. This carbon sponge can absorb more than 4 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year per hectare of trees planted, making it more effective than the Amazon rainforest at sucking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.
Porkbush Gin supports Wonder Plant, a social enterprise owned and operated by Heart Capital. We use the Spekboom planted and grown by entrepreneurs and growers from Wonder Plant. Every batch uses a different grower’s Spekboom. For every bottle of Porkbush Gin sold, R10 will be donated to Wonder Plant’s Great Labyrinth of Africa project. Visit www.wonderplant.co.za for more information on the enterprise & the Great Labyrinth of Africa.
